In May 2018, I was diagnosed as prediabetes. It had been monitored but a virus pushed me seriously over. During the Christmas period I had been extremely unhealthy in the drinks I was having, which were high in sugar.
So my first change in diet was to remove all sugary soft drinks I was having. Water was increase and if I want a change in plain water, I moved to sparkling water, the carbonated adds a bit of interest to the water.
When I shop for foods off the shelf, I look at the carbohydrates level not the sugars, I stick with 15g or lower on the packet.
Yes, the doctor put me on medication to assist in regaining insulin sensitivity. I took my blood sugar levels and created an excel spread sheet to monitor the levels and to enable the doctor to have a record when I had my next follow-up.
Before each follow-up appointment my bloods were tested, result have shown with each test. The last test showed I was no longer prediabetic. At my next test which will be five months after my last checkup, we will see if I am still on track and that I kept things balanced.
I am not as strict as I was with fresh food, I no longer restrict high carb food out of the diet. I have also invested from a polar watch to a Fitbit only because the polar watch’s capacitator was annoying the nerves in my hand and was giving discomfort to my thumb. The Fitbit does not cause this issue.
Walking is my main exercise through the day, I like to see 12,000 plus steps a day, but it depends on how busy my office work days and I always ensure I walk to and from the train station each day, my working day has always involved a lot of walking but as a result of surgery on my left shin in late 2013, I had become slower in that form of exercise whilst the leg healed which was an 18 month period and very slow TLC of feet problems.
It does not have to be a scary thing to face, as it only requires one to change their lifestyle in small increments and pay attention to the process. Family can help by communicating with them.
